DOES HE STILL FEEL THE NAILS?

Many years ago singer/songwriter Ray Boltz sang a powerful song which was popular. It was a song about someone who was wondering if Jesus still feels the pain of the nails thru His body every time we fail.

I have not heard it sung by many others. Our pastor down in Georgia sang it and did a good job on it. Here is another rendering of it.

I did not grow up in a Christian home. I was a professing atheist until I was about 30 years old. I guess what I am saying is that I didn’t have anything taught to me that I had to deal with to accept the Truth when I eventually came face to face with it … nothing to unlearn, nothing to reject, nothing that got in the way. The Gospel was very clear to me as there was nothing in my life to cloud or muddy it up.

This song was written to Christians … those who had already called on the Name of Jesus to be saved. We need to remember that getting saved does not make anyone perfect … just forgiven. We are still capable of sinning … falling short of what expects and demands of us. God knows we will all fail … that we will sin. That is why He told us “If and when we sin we are to confess it to Jesus and ask for His forgiveness.” His Word tells us that “He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sin and cleanse us from our unrighteousness”. The word righteousness means “right standing with God”.

In this song this person is pondering over Jesus’ response to our sin. He is asking if Jesus still feels the pain He went thru to purchase our salvation. Can you imagine having iron nails pounded into and thru your wrists and ankles? Just a simple small sliver can be very painful. Jesus willingly suffered greatly to purchase our salvation. He paid a debt He did not owe. We owed a debt we could not pay. We needed help that only God could provide. Not only did He have the nails causing great pain, but He had just previously endured 39 lashes of a special whip designed to tear chunks of skin and tissue from the bodies of those being whipped. 39 lashes was determined to be the maximum number of times a person could endure with death likely occurring. To make matters even worse His beard was plucked out and a crown made of thorns was jammed onto His head. These were thorns about 2 inches in length. That had to hurt immensely as well.

Who nailed Jesus to the cross? You did! And I helped you. Every one of us are responsible for Jesus being nailed to a cruel wooden cross. The hammer was in our hand …

If we had no sin it would not have been necessary for Jesus to die for us. But sin is very real and very serious and God is very serious about it. That is why it is most important that we face up to it and deal with it. If we ignore it and reject what Jesus did about it we will pay for our sin ourselves. Oh, we won’t have to have nails driven into our bodies. That ended with Jesus. What a person faces is far worse than the crucifixion. I am talking about eternal punishment in hellfire. 10,000 years and it will just be beginning. We can’t even imagine eternity. Wouldn’t you much rather spend eternity with the God Who created you and loves you? What is it going to take to reach you? To convince you? To get your attention? God demonstrated His love for you by dying on a cross while you and I were in the very act of sinning. He stretched out His arms and died for us … taking our place. We deserve that punishment for our sin, but He was sinless … He did not deserve any of what He went thru to pay our debt.

When we stop to think about it He grew the very tree that was used to make an old rugged cross He would be crucified on.

When Jesus came into this world born as a baby and growing up in a Jewish family He was simply accepted by the community as just the child of Joseph and Mary. But as He grew and eventually started ministering spiritual things He was rejected by this world He had created. The Jews had their religious leaders and they did not want anyone to come along and mess up all they had going for them. They were the ones insisting on the death of Jesus. They got their way.

God requires repentance. To repent means to have a change of thought and intent … to make an about face (turn around) and go the opposite direction. We need to be sorry for our sin which is rebellion against God.

The following is probably the most important video you will ever see …

Have you confessed your sin and asked Jesus to forgive and save you? Now is the time to do it. Don’t put it off. This could be your last chance as you may not be alive tomorrow. If you die in your sin your fate is sealed. Eternity is a long time to suffer and regret.
