Many of work hard all our lives to acquire material possessions. We all want things. We all need things. But how much do we need?
Garages are intended to house cars, but how many people use them for storage instead? Their cars sit outside in the weather. Seems strange to me as it makes no sense.
One thing I have learned in life is “possessions are a burden”. We may own them but in reality they own us. The more we accumulate the more complex life becomes. We would be better off if we simply stuck to what we need in life. At the end of our lives somebody has to do something we all of the things we have. People with good sense start downsizing as they age. A rule of thumb is if you haven’t used it for some time get rid of it.
I am reminded of the TV commercial where a mother and daughter are together. A garage door is opened and the garage is packed full of all sorts of things the mother has accumulated. The mother says to her daughter “Just think, someday all of this will be yours.” The daughter replies “THANKS?”
One thing about it … we can’t take it with us when we die. We have all heard the saying “I have never seen a U-haul trailer behind a hearse.” We came into this world with nothing and we will go out with nothing. When that times comes most of us won’t be at all concerned about all our possessions.
Concentrating on gaining wealth and possessions while neglecting our eternal soul is not only foolish, but very dangerous. The biblical verse “For what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul” … Mark 8:36 and Matthew 16:26. It emphasizes that material gains are meaningless if they come at the cost of one’s spiritual well-being. That is exactly what the devil does to keep us away from pursuing God in our lives.
Then there is the man who died and went to heaven. He arrived with a large container of gold he took with him. When he was greeted by St. Peter he was asked what it was that he brought. He showed it to St. Peter and St. Peter replied “you brought paving bricks?” Note-the streets of heaven are paved with gold. Gold and silver may be rare and valuable here on earth, but they are quite common where God is at.
Nope, we can’t take anything with us on our journey. And we are all going whether we like it or not. It is going to be a rude awakening for many of us. Just this morning I read the obituary of Ted Turner. He was a multi-billionaire. I read where he gave a billion dollars to the UN (United Nothing as it is jokingly called). What a waste of money!!! Anyway, he most definitely is fully convinced of the truth now, but it is too late to do anything about it. His fate is sealed.
Our eternal fate is already selected. However, as long as we have the ability to call on Jesus it can be changed. He stands ready to forgive us of our sin if we are willing to confess it to Him and turn from it. He will help us as we are not able to do it on our own. Only Jesus can save us and make us whole (complete). It is your choice. He owns us as He created us. We are accountable to Him. What will you do with Jesus? Someday your heart will be asking … what will He do with me? The answer to that is written in His Word. Those who die in their sin will perish in hellfire for all eternity. And naked you will be as you can’t take anything with you.
The devil will have us busy accumulating earthly goods and totally neglecting what really matters
