We have heard of the Holy Trinity for a very long time. It has been taught for a very long time, but still there are many people who just refuse to believe it. They totally reject it and want to argue about it. But it is really not hard to see in scripture. Very early on we read in Genesis 1:26-28 God says “Let Us make man in our own image and likeness”. It does not say Let Me. It clearly says let Us. So God has to be more than just one Person. People tend to misunderstand the Trinity. Many seem to think that those who believe in the Holy Trinity believe there 3 Gods. That is not at all what the bible teaches. The bible teaches that there are 3 Persons Who make up the One God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit are all individual Persons. Some people accept the Father and the Son as Persons and separate from the other, but they believe the Holy Spirit to be an it … not a Person.

In the book of Acts chapter 5 we read the story about a married couple named Ananias and Sapphire who sold some property and gave some of the money to the Apostles telling them that it was all of the money they received in the sale. They had held back some of the money for themselves. That would have be okay as they were not under any obligation to give all of it to the church. Of course, they were lying and the Holy Spirit revealed this to Peter. Peter confronted them and said to them that they had lied to God. You can’t lie to an it … only to a person. So the Holy Spirit is being called God. The Holy Spirit is indeed a Person … the third Person of the Holy Trinity.

I readily admit that there is no easy explanation and this concept can be hard to understand. There are illustrations that are used to help explain it. Probably the most common one is water. We all know what water is. We drink it, bathe in it, cook with it, swim in it … etc. When we think of water we think of a clear liquid, but water can also be frozen which we then call ice or it can be superheated to where it becomes steam. But whether liquid, frozen or superheated it is all water. Hmmm, 3 different forms but all are water. To help understand the Holy Trinity I offer this …

The Holy Trinity model of three parts within one may further be explained through the term consubstantial. Consubstantial essentially means being of the same material or substance. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are differentiated in their respective roles, but they come from the same source. According to Christian doctrine, the Trinity members exist as co-creators and eternal entities from the same source. The bottom line is the Holy Trinity is in the bible and we need to accept it whether we can understand it or not. Some people read the bible. That is good. It is a start, but commands that we “study the scripture, rightly dividing and understanding it so that we have God’s approval and please Him. If we have preconceived beliefs, teachings, etc. we have one strike against us. We need to empty ourselves of such and prayerfully ask God (the Holy Spirit) to show us and teach us and help us to understand and accept the truth.

Whether or not you understand or agree it is what it is. God is infinite while we have a finite mind. Somethings we just need to accept by faith. Without faith it is impossible to please God.
