There are a lot of thoughts, beliefs and doubts out there concerning Jesus. One thing for sure, He was no ordinary man. He started out fairly ordinary being born as a baby and growing up as a child in manhood. But right from the very beginning there were things about him that were a bit different. He is the only child that did not have an earthly father. With God all things are possible and so He had a very special birth … a mother, yes, but no earthly father. The Holy Spirit caused a young virgin to become pregnant. It was a miraculous conception, but not an immaculate conception. Mary was indeed special in that she was chosen to give birth to Jesus, but Mary was just an ordinary female human being … sinful just like everybody else. She also needed a Savior just like everybody else. God’s Word says that All have sinned … that included Mary.
Can you imagine losing God, the Son … by leaving a place with your husband and leaving your child behind … getting some distance away without realizing you didn’t have your child with you? Mary and her husband Joseph left Jesus behind as they left where they were at. Pretty amazing, huh? Jesus, was 12 years old then. He grew up following in Joseph’s footsteps … becoming a carpenter. He lived a fairly normal life until the age of 33. That is when He started His earthly ministry.
Of course, Mary would have had to known that Jesus was special. First there was the fatherless birth. Jesus as a perfect child as He grew up. Mary had to have noticed that. When Jesus was left behind at age 12 He was in the Temple with men. He was already very knowledgeable and skilled at handling the Holy Scriptures. Mary had to be aware of that. At the age of 33 Jesus performed His first miracle at a wedding. They had ran out of wine and Mary came to Jesus asking for His help. She had faith in her Son believing that He could remedy the situation. From then on Jesus did many miracles. Scripture does not tell us much more about Mary. Consequently we are left on our own pondering over what She knew and understood concerning Jesus. We know she was there at His crucifixion as well as a part of those who were gathered together in the “upper room” waiting just as Jesus instructed them to do.
But as Jesus was growing up do you suppose that Mary pondered over such things as her Son someday walking on water, raising the dead back to life or saving sinful man from the wages of their sin? Did she realize that when she kissed her little baby she kissed the face of God? I rather doubt it. Such thoughts probably never entered her mind. Certainly after the fact, she understood it. She was counted among Jesus’s followers as she trusted in Jesus as her Savior. How terribly difficult it must have been to look upon the One she raised hanging there on a cruel cross, shedding His innocent blood, suffering in extreme pain … being so mistreated by His fellowman. Her heart had to have been torn out.
I personally think one of the most powerful Christian songs ever written was about this very subject … Mary, Did You Know? Mark Lowry is a Christian standup comedian and singer who happened to write this song which was and is very popular. I guess it is considered a Christmas song as that is mostly when we hear it played although it can be played anytime of the year. As far as I know this is the only song Mark has written. He wrote it in 1984 but it was not put to music until 1991 when Buddy Greene, a professional Christian musician and singer, created the music.
That song was certainly inspired. Here is another version of it with actors and actresses.
I can listen to this song over and over as I find it so very powerful. Many different singers have sung it over the years and done a great job on it, but Mark is still my favorite. Here he is several years later singing it.
Mary Did You Know Lyrics
Mary, did you know that your baby boy Is Lord all creation? Mary, did you know that your baby boy Will one day rule the nations? Did you know that your baby boy Was Heaven’s perfect Lamb, And the sleeping Child you’re holding Is the great, the Great I AM? Oh, Mary, Mary, did you know?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy Would one day walk on water? Mary, did you know that your baby boy Would save our sons and daughters? Did you know that your baby boy Has come to make you new; This Child that you delivered Will soon deliver you?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy Will give sight to a blind man? Mary, did you know that your baby boy Would calm a storm with His hand? Did you know that your baby boy Has walked where angels trod, And when you kiss your little baby You’ve kissed the face of God? Mary, did you know?
The blind will see, the deaf will hear, The dead will live again, The lame will leap, the dumb will speak The praises of the Lamb!
