Most of us have heard or read those words before. But what do they mean? Who said them? Do you know? Do you understand them? There once was a religious leader who went to Jesus at night (so that he would not be seen). He did so because he wanted to talk to Jesus and ask Him a very important question he needed an answer to. His question was “What must I do to be saved?” Jesus answered him and told him that he must be born again. This answer perplexed him as he was already an old man and his thinking was that to be born again would involve reentering his mother’s womb to be born a second time. That was not at all what Jesus was talking about and Jesus went on to explain to him that He was talking about the second birth being of the Spirit. Everyone of us are born of the water … we are enveloped in water in the womb. At birth the water “breaks” and into this world we come. The water birth is the first birth.

We are born “spiritually dead”. We are cut off from God because of sin. We must be made alive unto God. This process is the second birth. Our spirit must be turned on … awakened unto God. That is what is means to be born again. God is the One Who does this when we come to Him confessing our sin and need of forgiveness.

Have you ever tried to read the bible and found it not understandable? That is because your spirit is turned off. You can not understand the things of God … spiritual things. Once born again this changes. God enables us to understand spiritual things.

Once we are born again many changes happen in our lives. God is able to work in our lives recreating us. There is a song which was very popular several years ago. Every new Christian can identify with it.

Yes, being born again is a wonderful and powerful thing that can happen in our life. There are churches all over full of people who attend who have never been born again. They don’t have a clue what being born again is all about. They are either ignorant of it, have bought into a lie from Satan that it means something different, or just ignore it telling themselves it is not important.

But it is important … very important. Jesus said that no one can enter heaven without being born again. I would say that that makes it very important. Are you born again? Would you like to be? You can be! You can read all about this in John chapter 3 … just like Evie sang about. We all need that second birth!

God created us, but since birth most of us are entirely self made … that is we have been entirely in charge of our lives living them however we wanted to. I ask you … Who do you think can do a better job of shaping our life … our self or God? The answer, of course, is God. Yes, we have been sitting on the throne of our life. God wants us to allow Him Lordship … that He can sit on that throne and takeover. He can and He wants to recreate us and make us the best person we can be. I assure you that you will never regret it. He said that He has come to give us life abundantly … to make our life more meaningful and fulfilling.

Sadly many people are enjoying their sin and want no part of God. But I remind you that sin only lasts for a season and then it is time to pay up. None of us can afford the price of sin. Sin will cost us out eternal soul.

Satan makes sin look very attractive. He dangles it out in front of us like the proverbial carrot on a stick … tempting us with whatever appeals to our flesh and we are not able to resist it as we are slaves to sin.

Only Jesus can help us in this battle. Only He can set us free. Call on Him. Put your faith, trust and hope in Him alone. Then you too can sing … Born Again … there’s really been a change in me. Born Again … just like Jesus said. And it is all possible because of Calvary … where Jesus bled and died for all of humanity. That includes you.

By the way … becoming a born again Christian does not mean that we stop having fun and enjoying our life. Life really can be fun and enjoyable without sin. God make a big difference. He changes everything so that we want to live our life to please Him and no longer sin.
