Do you deny being a sinner? Do you think you are as good if not better than the next guy? Would you dare argue with God? Would you call God a liar? If you say you have no sin you are calling God a liar as He says you do. Oh my! What shall I do?, you ask. There is only one thing you can do … agree with God and acknowledge that you are indeed a sinner and need His help.
And as to how good of a person you are in comparison to someone else … forget it. That doesn’t even come into play. That is not the measuring stick God uses. He uses Himself to measure each one of us. Our righteousness against His righteousness. How do you think you will compare? We won’t and we can’t. God is pure and holy … perfect in every way. All of our righteousness is as filthy rags when compared to Him. We need help and God offers it.
There in lies the problem, God has done all He can do and, indeed, all He needs to do to keep us from ending up in eternal damnation. The next move is ours to make and God patiently awaits us to make that move. It is all summed up on just one scripture verse …
We need to be very careful how we read and interpret that verse however. When it says “believes” it isn’t just talking about a mental thought in our mind, but a much deeper thought process involving our hearts … that we truly embrace Jesus in our innermost being … not just simply believe in our heads, but fully accept Him in our hearts. Satan and his demons believe in Jesus but you can bet they are not on their way to heaven. No, believing in Jesus here means to highly cherish Him and trust in Him as much as is possible. It is a matter of placing our complete trust and hope in Jesus alone. He can take us thru anything in our lives.
I spent 8 years in the Navy and can truthfully say that the nearly 400 foot long destroyer ships I served on were our savior while out on the seas of the world. We put our entire trust and hope in that vessel to keep us safe and get us to the other shore. It never failed us. Sometimes we used our anchor. Usually it held us in position, but sometimes we would drag the anchor and our ship would move out of position. There can be different reasons for it. The anchor didn’t hold then. That never happens with Jesus. He never fails to hold us tightly and keep us from slipping out of position.
Back to the matter of sin … it is real, it is serious … most serious … and can’t be ignored. It is our responsibility to deal with it. We must get and remain in a right relationship with God. It is up to us. No one can nor will do it for us. God has done all He can do to help us. It is now our turn to respond to Him. It starts with acknowledging our sin … agreeing with God that we are guilty as charged and seek His mercy. Denying our guilt will gain us nothing. We are calling God a liar if and when we do that. And God is not a liar!
