ONLY 2 ROADS

Life is like a journey where each of us travels along on a road … a road others are travelling along as well. There are not many different roads available, but only two. One of them is heavily traveled by most of us while the other has far less traffic. The one that is heavily used is like a super highway. It has to be in order to handle all the traffic. The other is like a narrow path and more challenging to walk on. Like most roads they both have destinations.

I purposely said “most roads have a destination” because I have driven on some in Japan when I was in the U.S. Navy. I started out driving on a multiple (6, I think) lane highway … a super highway like our Interstates. All was going well until it suddenly changed to a two lane highway. I kept driving and it changed to a narrower two lane road. And then a while further it changed to a single lane road barely wide enough for my car … which was a Honda Civic. Finally it narrowed down to a dirt path just wide enough for animals to use. It lead to a farm. It was the weirdest thing I had ever seen. Never once did I see a sign informing/warning drivers of this. I ended up having to turn around and back track to find a different route. I had a map, but it was not very helpful.

Back to what I started writing about … Everyone of us start off in life going down the broad highway which means that road is busy all the time.

Do you remember the Burma Shave signs that used to be along the highways in America? They always had some kind of a cute catchy message we enjoyed reading as we drove by them. They are long gone now. I mention them because they remind me of the many signs God has placed along that broad highway. His signs are also to provide us with opportunity to know about the narrow path we can take … a path that leads to God and all the good things He offers us. He also warns us of the Broad Road that many travel on, but leads to destruction. Sadly very few of the travelers on the broad road leave that road and take the narrow path. They think they are comfortable and safe and enjoying all that is available along the broad road. They have been warned what lies ahead but they don’t seem to care. I assume they don’t believe it. I am not sure what their reason is.

It comes down to a personal choice that only we can make. We are already on the broad road. Everyone on it is just shuffling along … sort of a blind leading the blind thing … all headed for certain destruction upon reaching their destination (where the road takes them). That other road … the narrow path with the narrow gate is available to them. They don’t have to stay on that broad road. God built that narrow road just for those who will use it. It is His will that we choose the narrow path. It was extremely costly to Him personally to provide that choice.

I didn’t mention that both roads are toll roads. Those who are on the broad road pay their own toll. But God in His love for us paid the toll for all who take the narrow path. It is the best deal around. You won’t find a better deal. The toll one has to pay on the broad road it one’s eternal soul. That may not sound like any big deal at first, but we need to understand that we are talking about eternal torment where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth as they burn in the Lake of Fire forever. They never burn up. It will never end. There won’t be anything you can do about it … just suffer.

You must make the choice for the narrow path before you reach your final destination on the broad road. And the thing about it is you never know just when you will reach your final destination. That makes it very dangerous and foolish to procrastinate. Hardening of the heart can cost you your soul. Rejecting God’s salvation is the most tragic decision a person can make.

The question is … How shall we escape if we neglect and reject so great of a salvation being offered to us? And it is free to us even though it cost God His very life after a horrific beating and form of death. He was willing to pay the price out of His tremendous love for us.

Don’t be like the boy in these images. He rejected the salvation and returned on his journey on the wide road which leads to destruction.

That wide road … it comes to a sudden abrupt end where everyone walking along on it will simply plunge off the end right into hell fire below. You really do have a choice. If you have not made it for the narrow path then you have already made it for the broad road which you are already on. You are just shuffling along in the crowd oblivious to what lies ahead … even though you have been warned.

You might be enjoying that broad road now, but I assure you that you won’t be when you reach the end of the road. The pleasures of sin only last for a season and then it is time to pay the wages of sin.

The Holy Scriptures have the answer to all of life’s questions and challenges. One subject covered is life expectancy … 70 years is the average, but we have no assurance of our next breath or heartbeat. Like I said earlier … it is very dangerous and foolish to procrastinate.
